Can any AT&T customers suggest how to get my phone unlocked before I get back to Australia? Does Apple do it?

Phones purchased in the USA cannot be unlocked the way phones in Australia can. It’s shitty and annoying and if you unlock it yourself be prepared to never update your iOS again cause it will brick your phone.

Apple doesn’t unlock phones. You’d either have to do it yourself or take it to a mobile phone technician. Unlocking the phone will void the warranty, so that is something to consider.
